1964-65 I rented a former Kosher meat store on East 10th Street in late-1964, with groovy tile walls and chicken-singeing equipment which I transformed into a vegetarian literary zone called the Peace Eye Bookstore. I left the words "Strictly Kosher" on the front window.Next door above the Lifschutz wholesale egg market lived Tuli Kupferberg, a beat hero who was featured in anthologies such as The Beat Scene, and who published several fine magazines, Birthand Yeah, which he sold on the streets of the East and West Village. I had published Tuli's poetry in my literary journal, Fuck You/ A Magazine of the Arts.

Last night I got half a listed bucket. In 1999 back from LA, focused on the book, I went to a celebration of Allen Ginsberg's work at St. John the Divine and afterwards, moving a little through the afterwards mingling, Ed Sanders of THE FUGS grins at me, with Tuli Kupferberg, farther to my left, and says, grinning, "he's a messenger." Like with, author, Robert Caro, I freaked out. Caro overwhelmed me and we talked. In that moment with Mr. Sanders the word didn't happen but the thought of too much celebrity occurred and I turned and literally ran. Tuli, who I always had a nodding, as we passed, relationship, just moved toward Ed with a little oh no of some kind. Outside I was embarrassed and went back to apologize and they weren't there, and the night ended walking out of the church with a large group of women. So last night we went to see THE FUGS at THE LOFT that had a nice Graham Nash photo exhibit with Joni Mitchell featured. Afterwards he was shaking hands near the exit and eventually we moved towards each other and shook hands. I made a comment about his mustache reminding one of "Twain" and he said it also gets referred to as a Hitler expression. A little later maybe someone got a photo of Ed with my peace finger sign above his head. He is an advertising specialist so it feels somewhat nicely arranged. Picture or not that peace sign looked darn good above his head. Malcolm P. S.
