Where wrong cannot be recognized if clarity rests in the shadows unpolished by the light. When there's no recess in the always in session court of public opinion marked by varying degrees of imaginative publicity the public endures, susceptible to the most disturbing public private hijinks. If only twisting the truth were just the half-of-it. 

From a surface, cursory, look there seems to be something of comforting value in the proportion blowing candidate for Mayor of New York City Anthony Weiner Scandal. That not so rare Public Relations phenomena of losing a round.

With a twist. Though practically multitudes (my embellishment) of associates answer Mr. Weiner's queries for advice, which is basically his appearing to handle this on his own, no professionals were named early advisors even wanting to be paid as if this has truly been the most devastating melodramatic political burnout possible. Really? Even Popes have been disclosed as outright deviants, though, for the most part already dead when evidence is revealed, but still. Presidents, philanderers of the most executively privileged bent. Right, Mr. Weiner is married and I can personally feel flirting is over an unfaithful line. But media coverage is the thing. 

For instance Bill O'Reilly blowing his top over black on black crime. There are buttons to push to be in the public eye.

TV news reports even mention former Congressman Weiner's running for office now is damage control giving the politician a better opportunity at a later date, having already challenged the embarrassment. Pshaw. 

Fact is people are goofy and the most straight laced respectful, polite person in the realm of sexual compulsion appears not quite normal either. 

The question is how affordable is the circus as an answer? That Anthony Weiner can't yet directly buy his way out of this particular Public Relations spectacle isn't the problem. He's paid a price and the public has been amused. The problem is money is how debates are decided. 

Global Warming. Equal Time. Time was when perhaps a pint of ale bought political favor while today's just more simply complicated? Still might always makes right and hope is truth one day actually brightens deceit for all to see that when nothing matters except winning and the battle for territory is everything, it's one-sided. Know what I mean?

The public shouldn't be pieces in a chess game but are. Otherwise there's little point finding out what people think at all. It's not an accident real life is stranger than fiction. In fact The New York Times July 27th reported Anthony Weiner's 28 year old campaign manager, Danny Kedem quit which could pass for fiction. No?

Specifics were noted by RUSSIA Beyond The Headlines, while Pravda even had some nice regime editorializing under the title, Alexei Navalny follows the path of Pussy Riot.

Of course what's fascinating is the public is supposed to make up their own minds about the polished melodrama that makes up the news. In The Edward Snowden In Transit Affair it seems the truth has us all in over our heads. Where producers of Twilight Zone hold onto all our poor pawns' scripts. Really. As much as government is right wanting to control their reality, misguided, misjudged, or even in a purely innocent way, governments should still have to be judged on the same level of distrust as its' investigated citizens. The basis upon which rule of law exists. It's all used against us in a court of law? The Russian Court System's shame is that Mr. Navalny's lawyers did not get to present his complete case. But then courts muddle things the same as the rest of us. If only we all shared a degree of that same immunity.

But, no fear, all is right with the world's public imagery. July 27th The New York Times also reported Putin in Ukraine to Celebrate a Christian Anniversary.

We want institutions to be more than brick and mortar façades. Revenge is no real reward, and so justice is not the enforcement of law but the facilitation of ending territorial violence in all forms from individuals to States.

Before President Obama's, relatively cohesive, September 10th, explanation of the Syrian chemical gas crisis, ritualized public debate was already off to the races over how much or little influence the president has left in his second term.

Monday morning quarterbacking abounded before last Tuesday night's speech and will, of course, continue such that, as a political opponent, the president's days are depicted waning, as if tunnel-visioning American opinion wasn't the most despicably shallow commercial act feasible. Hardly. But there's (been) a virtual chantlike cacophony that to do the right thing and negotiate political compromise is nothing compared to the power to do what one wants anyway as the only true definition and test of what wielding presidential power is. Forget just getting people to understand there's no such thing as a holy war for Allah/God. Hands, anyone? Soapbox View!

Focusing on the manner in which people are led by cock and bull, the more amusing and tawdry jokes tangentially evolve (freedom fries) into the irrelevant re-paraphrasings of public perception that are as much or more focused than polling's serious punchlines. Because the consuming public is indoctrinated into what's optimal, infotainment moods, rather than open questioning that values discernment. For that reason it has been assumed for generations that mass communication is a poisoned well of propaganda such that no one can be told what they don't want to know. In spite of the smiling serious show faces of newsreaders.

So we really can democratically joke it's not just emperors who're not wearing clothes anymore? Why even serious News is so heavy-laden with sugar and sappy that the taint drips off of us onto the voting booth floor where, as an electorate, we're slipping and sliding to the polls on one or only a few well worn-out tracks the in-crowd is content with for political expedience.

On the surface what appears amazing about Syria is, outside of Syria, it's almost as if everyone is on the same page? Though Washington's The Hill documented congressional reactions that were relatively correct perceiving slights to American Interests, smoke rings aside when I finished last Wednesday's editorial printed by The New York Times, A Plea for Caution From Russia, What Putin Has to Say to Americans About Syria by Vladimir V. Putin, I was struck wondering if President Putin, or even their stand-in speechwriter, can write so relatively well, why was it so necessary to stockpile such a huge personal fortune to fall back on in active retirement?

Though according to the Public Editor Margaret Sullivan in The Story Behind the Putin Op-Ed Article in The Times in The New York Times, Russia's president didn't collect a fee for the editorial submitted by his Moscow Public Relations firm. So it's probably naive, as usual, to question why federal funds anywhere seem to have to go missing from off the top since everyone must get paid? Ba dump bump. And an oh well.

Whatever's true or politically true isn't the point. True or not in negotiations positions aren't given up unless something is gotten in return. But in light of innocents dying every day, you'd think there'd be more pride in accuracy than knee-jerk diplomacy. After all history sweeps it all up after the victors and victims are gone and this world's heavy-hitters should care more about how they'll be written up than how well the world's honorable PR professionals are paid to depict them to a consuming rather than active public consciousness. 
Already, of course until Syria heatens, the world doesn't stand still as we're all overwhelmed by the many diverse personal tragedies associated with daily survival. Last week's Colorado flooding as an example that dominated the next day's news after President Obama's speech and President Putin's written public statement. But imagine war as apparently not hard to wish upon others?

When we should just be shaking our heads and smiling because we're truly thinking we're turning corners pursuing loftier horizons than ever endeavored upon before? While the public is led to think of itself as what the centers of power want? But in this one decision not to categorically strike is a deeper meaning than what, in not enough retrospect, was a rash decision to expand American participation in the cycle of revenge. All because the military industrial complex was ready and rar·in' to go?   Reuters et al. reports prominent 35 year old Russian opposition leaders, Alexei Navalny and Sergei Udaltsov, were jailed, for 15 days for disobeying a police officer at a peaceful protest on Tuesday against President Putin’s gala Monday inauguration. The Guardian cites the protest duos sentence as a sign the authorities’ patience could be running out as their cases are linked to Sunday’s violence. As The New York Times reported, 40 year old art director, Aleksei Yeryomin, saying, “Up until now, all was peaceful.”

  How necessary was it for everyone’s nerves to escalate?

  Times Moscow Bureau Chief ELLEN BARRY and reporter SOPHIA KISHKOVSKY honestly point to Sunday’s violence starting when a group of radical activists apparently tried breaking through a police column to reach the Kremlin. So now the same new president refuses to face criticism for riot police using batons and pepper spray.

  The Times nailed it. The paper quotes Alexander Rahr, a Russia expert with the German Council on Foreign Relations. “He (President Putin) is caught in the understanding that he is the savior of Russia, that everything depends on him. He sees himself as a historical figure already, a man who prevented the collapse of the country. The problem is, now he has to meet the real demands of people who are 30 years younger than him.” 

  For months the conflict of two Russias has been in the media about how Putin made this prosperous generation possible. But the new president should remember and think about how people became impatient with Gorbachev. That’s why when the Soviet reign ended Yeltsin could replace Mikhail. Otherwise deep down everyone loved Gorbachev and probably didn’t want to let him down. That is why Russia is this far today. Maybe the country survived for him and itself and Vladimir Putin still has to prove his legacy can be bigger than himself too for the Fatherland as he says he believes.

  Which would mean cutting out the crap. Such as his officials continuing to downplay the protests. Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told Russia Today, “I don’t see a link between these incidents and the situation in the country as a whole. What I saw was a bunch of marginal people.”

  So whether you see it now, or not, President Vladimir Putin. Your mandate from this election is to uncorrupt the electoral process. After all a man of your stature doesn’t have to worry much. Your padded Supreme Court could probably give you a free ride through that election too if the results were close.

  Finally a meeting pitching Ed Begley Jr. Moves Next Door. Each month Ed moves into a new home given homeless families after Ed's departs. Ed enlightens neighbors about bicycle life, and how there's so much to gain from safe cycling and trains without auto congestion everywhere. How there's room for everyone. Even safety and Car Culture. Though much spookier now that it's obvious we're in the machines' way.

  Ed starts every episode puttering around the kitchen preparing breakfast. Episode #1 Ed says, "Of course I don't prepare all this myself. I have to get something working union rates." Said to an unseen narrator, embodied by the camera, Ed converses constantly with. He'll answer Ed's wages crack with, "Now don't go all political on us Ed." And Ed will smile and wave a utensil at the screen while the scene dissolves to commercial, but camera remains, as always, incessantly, obsessively focused on Ed. Other actors have to intrude between him and his camera to feel heard. The feeling of invisibility is uncomfortable for everyone, even sympathetic Ed. While the camera/narrator is heard both cracking up and seen bouncing with glee. Ed's wife, Rachelle Carson, has her own narrator, camera, etc. One episode the cameras duel to Dueling Banjos. A knock-off band. Live as the taped show films under the presumption of being alive tracing life. Like Survivor everyone's on Ed's Island. All Begleys have personal camera/narrators. 

  Back from first commercial, Ed's on his bike heading straight over the ground level camera. Bending down to look right into the face of the lens. Ed says, "Let's go." Then he first tours that community's best safe bike lane. Ed goes to one public City Council meeting. Plus whatever captures his curiosity because Ed lives there. Not just visiting for photographs. See the world. Get out of his California cocoon for a while. Do the man good in his un-retiring years and all. Like all agents Ed's is a waiter. But I bet Ed'd go for it. Oprah? Oh? Uh. Meeting's over. On Begley Street exists. And Living with Ed. And, never mind.

  So anyway, Mr. President. Catch the drift's gist? Something like that. Broaden horizons. Make your career more interesting. Not just this sycophantic brazen Chester business. Authoritative chests pushed out to here. The groveling that must go on in mimicking this. It debilitates most countries. Better not be involved? Others responsible? Stalin's style. Except to be more than a celebrity president. A true star. Beyond the manufactured glamorous shine provided by an elitism that's still just as Oblomovianly satisfied with the dirt-poor not belonging.
